This week we are offering a mixed case of Fairtrade and Organic wines from two different countries. In Chile the Los Robles winery has become known for its educational projects in which much-needed support is given to teachers at the Los Almendros School in the Curico Valley to help students of the very poor community there. In South Africa, Stellar Organics specialises in producing organically made wines that are traded in accordance with international Fairtrade standards.
The Fairtrade and organic case costs £73 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.
Los Almendros Sauvignon Blanc 2008, Chile: Crisp and lively sauvignon from the Los Robles winery in the Curico Valley. The winery is known for its fight against poverty in the Curico area of Chile and has produced this modern-made and refreshing wine which is both good as an aperitif and with a variety of foods.
Stellar Organics Chenin/Sauvignon Blanc 2008, South Africa: Both Fairtrade and organically grown, Stellar Organics use ducks to keep the grapes for this refreshing wine free from pests and snails — a far more efficient and eco-friendly method than the use of harmful pesticides. A creamy and grassy style with a lifted aromatic nose and buttery gooseberry fruit Los Almendros Carmenere 2007, Chile: Carmenere was originally brought to Chile from Bordeaux but is now much more associated with the former area rather than the latter. This Fairtrade example has flavours of caramel, forest fruits and cream and makes a perfect mix with stews or casseroles.
Stellar Organics Shiraz 2007, South Africa: Nicely spicy with flavours of subtle black pepper and saddle leather, this delicious soft and fruit-driven wine makes a good match with rich dishes and pasta based meals seasoned with herbs
