Oxford residents are being asked where 20mph speed limits should be introduced in the city in the latest consultation on the controversial speed cutting plan.

A survey published last autumn showed two thirds of those who responded in Oxford backed the idea of 20mph limits.

Now Oxfordshire County Council, the highways authority, wants to know which roads people want as part of the scheme.

This week County Hall earmarked £300,000 to install 20mph road signs on residential roads in Oxford, along with some sections of A and B roads.

But safety groups are pressing for a blanket 20mph limit in the city.

The consultation, which started yesterday, could be vital in deciding how widespread the scheme will be.

Paul Cullen of the Life Begins at 20 group, which backs a blanket 20mph limit said: “The worst thing would be to send out a mixed message, where drivers don’t know if they are in a 20mph zone or not.”

But Mark McArthur Christie, director of the Oxford-based transport think tank Forward, said a 20mph limit would be an ineffective “blunt instrument.”

The consultation ends on March 5. Visit oxfordshire.gov.uk/20limits to have your say.
