Police have named Jon Shirley as the man they want to speak to about a string of violent robberies around the city.
Shirley, 23, was described by detectives as “armed and dangerous” and said he was their number one target as they appealed for help to capture him.
Shirley is wanted for questioning about an armed raid on a BP petrol station in Cherwell Drive, in Oxford, and in connection with a further 11 robberies in which he may have been working with an accomplice, during the past two months.
Det Chief Insp Colin Paine, of Oxford Priority Crime, said police had taken an unusual step in naming Shirley in a bid to capture him and protect the public.
He added: “He is a chaotic and desperate man at the moment and needs to be caught. He is the top priority for the Oxford area.
“He is someone who is dangerous and has access to weapons, including what appears to be a firearm.
“It’s possible he may now try to leave Oxford or go into hiding. Therefore I would like to encourage bus drivers, taxi drivers and members of the public, to familiarise yourself with his face.”
The most recent of the robberries was a violent attack on shopkeeper Paul McLoughlin, 63, who was pistol-whipped in the face during a robbery at Londis in Wheatley on Wednesday.
In each incident the robber has covered his face with a scarf, ski mask or balaclava, wears gloves and always changes his outfit, DCI Paine added.
Detectives believe Shirley has links with Wheatley and Oxford.
The raids have rarely netted more than a couple of hundred pounds each time but at least four victims have been violently attacked.
Supt Andy Murray, Oxford Commander, warned people not to approach Shirley.
He added: “This man is armed and therefore dangerous. If you see him or know where he is do not approach him, call the police who will send specially equipped officers to arrest him.”
Oxford’s entire CID department is searching for Shirley with other specialist officers.
Police have made ten arrests in connection with the robberies but no one has been charged.
Shirley is described as white, about 6ft tall, with distinctive and untidy dark hair and a pudding bowl-style fringe, brown eyes, thick eye brows, a local accent and fairly slim build.
Anyone who spots Shirley or knows his whereabouts should dial 999 immediately.
