Sir – Why is it necessary to close Magdalen Bridge on May Morning? Just one or two lines of police with their backs to that part of the parapet of the bridge from where publicity-seeking fools try to jump would be enough to stop them.
This would be more sensible than deploying large numbers of police at either end of the bridge to prevent people from crossing over it. Contrary to what some people think, this dangerous practice is comparatively recent and not a tradition, giving some people an excuse for spoiling the fun of the majority.
Why should a few selfish people prevent all the others from hearing the voices of the choir singing from Magdalen tower, a tradition which goes back centuries. More consideration should also be given to those who live in East Oxford and need to get to work early in Oxford City centre. They have to take a long detour round on May Day.
