Sir – I rather enjoyed the brief disruption of heavy snow and thought I would offer you a list of winners and losers.
Winners: Surprise number one: The council, for what I thought was a sound job of keeping city roads passable (and pavements, within reason).
Lots of bus drivers taking extra care not to splatter pedestrians with slush or water Commercial snowman builders — the Summertown Cycle Shop was my favourite.
A few motorcyclists, showing that you don’t have to be brave, just careful.
Losers: NatWest Bank — only one branch open, of the three I tried.
Cyclists, who thought riding on packed ice on a pavement was safer than a wet road, and in particular the one weaving one-handed through the obstacles clutching his shopping and wearing a hi-visibility jacket labeled ‘Safety First’ (clear Darwin award candidate). One car with ice packed under his spoiler down to road level — you only collect that much by idiotic rally driving in the side roads. The council again, because the flooded roads remind us how badly our roads are engineered to cope with surface water.
