A GANG of men wearing hoodies tried to rob a student as he walked across a bridge.

The student was walking along Waterperry Road towards Oxford University’s Wheatley Campus when he was surrounded by a gang of up to seven people on the bridge which runs over the A40, at 7.30pm on Thursday, January 22. Police only issued a witness appeal on Friday.

They surrounded the student and asked if he had cash or a mobile phone. He said ‘no’ and ran to the campus.

The gang were all in their late teens to early 20s and were wearing dark coloured tracksuit bottoms and hooded tops.

They were all between 5ft 10in and 6ft tall except for one who was about 5ft 5in.

Pc Ali Foster, investigating the incident, said: “The men were intimidating and one held a large stick while another man had something shiny in his hand, which could have been a weapon.

“Although the men didn’t get anything this has left the student shaken.

“I’m keen to appeal to anyone who might have seen these men, or have any information to help with my inquiries, to contact me.”

Anyone with information should call police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
