Travel conditions for drivers are becoming increasingly difficult as heavy snow continues to fall across Oxfordshire.

Six inches of snow is thought to have fallen overnight and the Met Office has issued a severe weather warning, with drivers are now facing blizzard conditions.

Lorry drivers heading southbound on the A34 are struggling to get a grip on the road surface and drivers are being urged to go slow in the Banbury area on the M40.

Paul Wilson, in charge of gritting for the county council, said the Witney area was “suffering”, and crews have been diverted there.

Phil Ashworth, a spokesman for Oxford Bus Company, said conditions were “challenging” for bus drivers.

He added: “At the moment it’s a similar position to yesterday morning. We expect to be able to run a service on most of our local City services and on the park-and-ride routes.

“But we are having difficulties again with some of the estates we serve. We can’t get to Elms Rise, the City4, and Deans Court the City 4C, with buses are turning round at Elms Parade.

“We are not able to serve the Barton area with City8, and buses are turning around at the Headington roundabout.

“The 13 service is not able to use the Northway estate, but is running to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

“The espress service to London and the airline services to Heathrow and Gatwick are running well.”

Stagecoach bus drivers are experiencing difficult driving conditions in the Didcot area and Chris Child, a spokesman for the company, said managers were monitoring the situation carefully.

Drivers heading out of Abingdon are getting stuck in the snow as they drive towards Oxford in increasingly treacherous driving conditions.

A number of vehicles are reported to be stuck between the Twelve acre Drive/Dunmore Road roundabout and the Abingdon North turn-off.
