An art exhibition celebrating Oxford and the people who live in the city has issued its last call for entries.

The ‘People In The City’ exhibition will see dozens of works of art pay tribute to those who live and work in Oxford, with its iconic architecture being used as a backdrop.

So far, about 30 people have submitted paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos for the event, which will be held at the Town Hall Gallery in March.

The closing date for entries is Friday.

An Oxford artist who has submitted five photos for the event said it was a way for him to pay tribute to the city he had fallen in love with.

Douglas Vernimmen, 35, from Latimer Grange in Headington, said: “For me Oxford sits between fantasy and reality.

“It’s almost like you are living in the Middle Ages with all the colleges. It just looks so unreal.

“I’m really in love with Oxford and it’s my favourite topic of photography.”

Mr Vernimmen, who is originally from Liege in Belgium, but has lived in Oxford for five years, added: “If I had the chance I would love to go back in time with my camera and show how the people of Oxford have changed, but the buildings haven’t changed at all.

“The walls of Oxford will be here forever.

“It’s such a unique example in the world of a city that has been maintained in such a good state.”

The pictures he submitted include a shot of an acrobat hanging from a heliosphere in Broad Street, Oxford University graduates walking under the Bridge of Sighs and pictures of shoppers on Cornmarket Street.

The exhibition is the idea of Lord Mayor Susanna Pressel and is open to everyone who lives or works in Oxford.

Ms Pressel said: “This is about celebrating Oxford’s architecture, its people and our green spaces.

“We have had a lot of high quality entries to the competition, but I hope people take advantage of this opportunity to send in a few more.”

Anyone wanting to take part should send images — not originals — of the works they wish to exhibit to Owain Pearce at the Town Hall, St Aldate’s, Oxford OX1 1BX or opearce@oxford.gov.uk Entries should include a stamped, addressed envelope so that images can be returned.
