Police now believe a man who was reportedly hanged in Oxford took his own life.
Officers launched a murder investigation after the 34-year-old Asian man died at the John Radcliffe Hospital on Sunday night.
An ambulance crew had found the man unconscious on a drive in Clive Road, Cowley, at about 9.20pm, following a phone call to the ambulance control room, which indicated a man was hanging outside the house.
Two men, aged 30 and 35, were arrested in connection with the death after “various inconsistencies” emerged during police investigations.
However, following a media appeal for witnesses, officers received more information and now believe the man took his own life.
Oxford police commander Supt Andy Murray said: “As a result of this investigation and responses from witnesses from the media appeal yesterday, we were able to rule out the possibility that the man was murdered.
“The actual cause of death will be determined by the coroner, although the indications now are that he took his own life.”
Both of the arrested men have been released without charge.
