People who dump rubbish and shopping trollies in streams can be the cause of flooding which wrecks other people’s homes, the Environment Agency has warned.
During 11 days of clearing work at Wensum Stream and Ladygrove Brook on Didcot’s Ladygrove estate, bikes, trollies and estate agents’ boards were among the piles of rubbish dragged out of the water.
Works leader John Hiller said: “Instead of disposing of waste correctly people have thrown litter straight into the river.
“Not only does this wreck the beauty of a stream and damage wildlife, it also prevents the water from flowing freely and this can cause flooding.”
He urged people with properties edging the streams to ensure the area is free of rubbish and urged supermarkets to prevent shopping trollies from ending up in the water.
