A weekly farmers’ market will be setting out its stalls on an Oxford estate from the end of the month.

The new City and County Farmers’ Market will take place at the Kassam Stadium, in Greater Leys, every Sunday from November 23. Organiser Chris Elder — who has seven years experience organising markets around London — said the market would offer the best local produce from around the county.

He said the site was chosen because it offered the potential to expand, with more than 30 stalls confirmed for the first week.

Mr Elder said: “Having looked at several locations in the centre of town, we felt that it was too congested to hold a successful market there. The Kassam Stadium is obviously very well known to residents of Oxford and the surrounding areas as it the home to Oxford United.

“There is also already a very popular car boot sale held in the grounds every Sunday, which we hope will improve footfall.“ Oxford already has a number of farmers’ markets, but Mr Elder said he thought the new venue would make a good addition to the existing ones. Produce available on the day will include fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, cheese and breads.

Mr Elder added: “I know there is one at the Asian Cultural Centre in East Oxford and in places like Wolvercote, but the East Oxford one has a lot of arts and crafts and Wolvercote is about five miles from this market.

“There are roughly 120,000 people living in the Oxford area. With the surrounding villages that figure is much bigger and I think there is room for competition.”

Emphasising that farmers’ markets were not “overpriced”, he said stall holders had recognised the credit crunch was hitting people’s pockets. He said: “The products are competitively priced. I’ve noticed over the last 18 months that prices have really come down.

“The quality of the food available is also much higher and people can buy fresh food directly from the person who has grown or made it.”

The Kassam farmers’ market will be Mr Elder’s 12th, following on from his successes with markets in Hammersmith, Shepherd’s Bush and Alexandra Palace in London.

The market will take place in the car park from 10am to 3pm. For more information go to cityandcountryfarmersmarkets.com
