We don't consider ourselves prudish at the Oxford Mail, but the student night at the Kukui nightclub surely pushed the boundaries.
The Halloween party at the Park End Street venue included a ‘fetish snake show’ and topless women indulging in KY jelly wrestling. Police said afterwards that the organisers came close to breaking the law.
The fact that students flocked along probably tells its own tale.
But Rachel Cummings, Oxford University Student Union vice-president for women, said it created “a hostile environment” that many don’t want to see in this city.
Craig Simmons, leader of the Green group on the city council, said the event had highlighted a gap in the licensing regime which needed to be addressed.
He suggested there were issues over public decency and animal welfare that called for guidlines for the city’s club and bar owners.
A sensible suggestion, but how many of the students inside the club were genuinely disgusted?
It seems those truly shocked were a long way from the bizarre goings-on in Park End Street last week.
