Families turned out to see Steeple Aston fireworks go off with a bang on Guy Fawkes night.

More than 500 people wrapped up warm as they gathered to see the fireworks shoot into the dark sky last night.

The impressive display has been an annual event in the village, near Bicester, for 30 years.

Steeple Aston Parish Council vice chairman Richard Preston said £1,400 worth of fireworks had been let off — some were so loud they caught people by surprise.

He said: “People came from all over Oxfordshire to see the display. It was brilliant and went off very well. Thankfully, it did not rain.”

Mr Preston said this year’s event attracted more grandparents than before.

Visitors to the event, which was held at the village hall and recreation ground, were treated to a bonfire and home-made soup, sausages and juice for the youngsters.

Mr Preston added: “The village always holds the event on November 5.

“It is a traditional, good-quality community event.

“If there is any profit, the proceeds will go towards the sports and recreation facilities in the village.”
