International singing legend Dionne Warwick is appearing later this month at Oxford’s New Theatre.

The American singer, whose hits include Heartbreaker, Walk On By, and Anyone Who Had A Heart, will be performing at the George Street venue on Tuesday, November 25.

Diana Hackett, a spokesman for the New Theatre, said: “We are delighted that Dionne Warwick is coming to the New Theatre as part of her UK tour this month.

“As far as I am aware, this is the first time she has performed at this venue.”

Ms Warwick first scored a chart hit in 1962 with Don’t Make Me Over, and over the past four decades has established herself as a singing legend.

Her performance at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, during a 1963 concert starring Marlene Dietrich rocketed her to international stardom, and in 1968 she became the first African-American female performer to appear before the Queen at a Royal Command performance.

In recent years, the singer’s pioneering efforts have focused on leading the music industry in the fight against Aids.

Her Grammy-winning, chart-topping single That’s What Friends Are For led the way by raising millions of dollars for Aids research.

Ms Warwick has also devoted herself to a wide range humanitarian issues, serving as the US Ambassador for Health throughout the 1980s.

During her tour to the UK, she will also be promoting her first children’s book, which tells the story of girl singer Little D.

The book also includes an audio CD featuring a new recording of the song Jesus Loves You, the first song a young Dionne Warwick performed before an audience.

The singer, who is originally from New Jersey, was unavailable for comment.

But Carla Thompson, a spokesman for publisher Perseus Books, said: “Dionne is very much looking forward to her tour of the UK, which will also give her an opportunity to talk about her new book.”
