Sir – May I comment further on the letter from Jean Fooks and Dermot Roaf (October 30). I cannot understand the need for any increase in pavement width, what purpose does this serve?
Surely, trees or bicycle racks could have been more economically accommodated within the previous layout.
How will the possible shortage of disabled parking spaces be ‘assessed’?
Reduction of all parking spaces has become a matter of council policy; it has not been researched or justified.
Additional spaces cannot now be easily created, only substitution appears possible.
I rather doubt the quality of seats should simply be considered a matter of taste where public funds are concerned.
The sad toll of cyclists is testament to the dangers of combining traffic streams; it seems rash to risk other people’s lives on an ideological whim.
