A dance school has swept the boards at a national competition of footwork.

The Flair Dance Studio, based at St Gregory the Great School in Cricket Road, Cowley, Oxford, took home more than 50 trophies in the Camber Sands Freestyle and Street Dance Festival.

Fifty young dancers from the school — aged from four to 18 — travelled to the festival in Sussex last month to compete against dancers from across the UK and Europe. They were judged by BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing panellist, Len Goodman.

Kelly-Jayne Poulter, from Woodstock, who has run the school for the past 13 years, said this year’s performance had been exceptional.

She said: “I don’t know where we came overall because it isn’t measured like that, but I know that I can’t count all the trophies as there are so many.

“I think it’s around 50.

“I am so proud of all the kids. They’ve done brilliantly this year.”

While Ms Poulter said all the students had worked hard, there were three young girls who particularly impressed the judges.

Six-year-old Chloe Crook, from Horspath, and seven-year-olds Freya Bernie-Clare, from Cowley, and Lauryn Mulligan, from Kidlington, all came first in the under eights trio dance competition.

Chloe and Lauryn then went on to win the paired dance competition.

Chloe won yet another first in the solo round.

Chloe’s mother, Sandra, said: “We were all really proud of the girls. They did brilliantly.

“Chloe wants to be a champion dancer when she gets a bit older so this is a very good start for her.”

Lauryn’s mother, Claire, said her daughter had been especially excited to meet the Strictly Come Dancing judge.

She said: “She was really pleased to meet Len Goodman as she watches the show. He’s a lovely man and was brilliant with the kids.

“Lauryn has always shown an interest in dancing, so I took her along to the classes when she was old enough.

“And there are big things to come for her. She is a natural.”

Freya, a pupil at Our Lady’s Primary School in Cowley, said the three-times-a-week dance classes were great for meeting up with friends.

She said: “That’s one of the reasons I love going dancing.”

Stepfather Fabiano Bernie said: “We are all really proud of Freya.”
