Customers in Oxford pubs and clubs will need to be on their best behaviour from today following a crackdown on loutish antics.

Landlords of 30 city centre venues have signed up to the Banned scheme - which will see them adopt a ‘banned from one, banned from all’ approach to antisocial and violent drinkers.

Anyone caught causing trouble in one pub could be barred from all 30 for up to a year, under the initiative.

The joint Pubwatch, Nightsafe and Thames Valley Police scheme will go live at 11am, and will be the first time publicans have agreed to ban people from their premises as a collective force in Oxford.

Paul Strawson, manager of Copa in George Street, said: “Hopefully this will make Oxford a safer place to go out.

“No one will be banned willy-nilly. Decisions will be made by the committee based on the risk it is felt a person poses to other people.”
