It never ceases to amaze us how many cyclists are caught by the autumn police operation at Magdalen Bridge. The operation is as predictable as the clocks going back — an event it always follows.

Traffic officers have probably got the date of the 2009 operation in their diaries already.

The fact that so many cyclists were caught without lights proves the need to hold this operation every year. In a city where we are proud to say that cycling is one of the most significant ways for people to get about, it is sad that such a significant minority disobeys the law, placing themselves and others in great danger.
