Some of the country's most alternative musicians will descend on Oxford next month to take part in a day-long festival to raise money for charity.

Audioscope 2008 will be taking place at the Jericho Tavern in Walton Street on Saturday, November 15, between 1.30pm and midnight.

This is the eighth year the music festival has taken place in Oxford, during which time it has raised more than £17,000 for national homeless charity Shelter.

Festival organiser Stuart Fowkes said the event gave the city's music lovers a chance to hear bands "outside the mainstream" they would not normally get to see in Oxford.

Mr Fowkes said: "It serves two purposes and it is always a great day of live music for those who want to hear something a bit different.

"Not only are there going to be some fantastic bands from around the country, there will also be several Oxford-based bands taking to the stage."

Mr Fowkes's own band Sunnyvale Noise Sub-element will be starting things off on the day at the festival's new venue in Jericho.

Other bands taking part, include Boxcutter, The Oscillation and other Oxford-based bands Witches and The Workhouse. American DJ Kid 606 will be headlining the night.

There will be two warm up gigs at the The Cellar in Frewin Court, off Cornmarket Street in Oxford, on Thursday, November 6, and at The Regal in Magdalen Road, East Oxford, on Monday, November 10.

All the profits from these gigs, as well as the festival will go to Shelter.

Shelter's director of fundraising Alan Gosschalkcorr said: "In the wake of the credit crunch, as people struggle with mortgage arrears, negative equity and the threat of repossession, Audioscope's support has never been more vital."

Tickets cost £11 in advance from wegottickets.com or £12 on the door.
