Poems by a Didcot woman will be read by cake lovers all over the country.

Alison Brumfitt, 34, from Portway, has written poetry since her school days, and is displaying what she calls her "silly rhymes" on cupcake and lunchbox muffin packages.

Miss Brumfitt's poems appear on the boxes of Witney-based Fabulous Bakin' Boys cakes in Sainsbury's supermarkets across the UK.

Miss Brumffit, who writes poems for seasonal products, such as Halloween and Christmas, said: "I contacted the Fabulous Bakin' Boys, because I wanted to do something with a company that was locally based.

"I love the fact the Boys put 'not suitable for grumpy people' on their packaging and have a really quirky, friendly brand. They're a great fit for my work, which is also upbeat and fun."

The poet has also been writing for the bakery's website and replying to customers' letters in rhyme.

Miss Brumfitt added: "I know it's not exactly high art, but it's something that everyone can enjoy. I perform and run workshops all over the country but these poems show poetry can liven things up in unusual places."

During the week, Miss Brumfitt is head of communications for the South Central Ambulance Service.

She added: "It's a bit hectic fitting it in around the day job. I don't have a huge amount of free time, so I write a lot during evenings and weekends. I enjoy the poetry so much I couldn't give it up."

And Miss Brumfitt will soon be armed with free Bakin' Boys cakes to give away at her performances.

Gary Frank, the founder and managing director of the Fabulous Bakin' Boys, said: "We like to stand out from the crowd with our packaging and having Alison's poems feature on our packs will help show that poetry can be fun and will hopefully inspire adults and children across the country to write poems."
