Police said a clear-up operation was still taking place on the M40 following a collision between two lorries earlier today in which a man died.

One of the lorries was carrying lard, which spilled over both the north and southbound carriageways.

The motorway is closed between junctions six and four, Lewknor to High Wycombe, and police said it would remain closed until later this afternoon. Police said a definite time could not be given for when it will be reopened.

Police are still at the scene carrying out an investigation into the crash which happened shortly after 3am. One of the lorry drivers died in the collision.

A police spokesman said: "There are diversions in place on to the A40 at junction six, but we are still advising drivers to avoid this route if possible as there are still severe delays."

There is a ten-mile tailback from junction six to junction eight.

And commuters travelling on the diverted A40 route suffered further delays when a tree branch fell across the road on the southbound carriageway reducing the number of lanes.

This has now been dealt with, but high volumes of traffic are still on the road.
