Police said the clear-up operation is still taking place on the M40 following a collision between two lorries earlier this morning.

One of the lorries was carrying lard, which spilled over both the north and southbound carriageways.

The motorway is closed between junctions six and four, Lewknor to High Wycombe, and police said it will remain closed until later this afternoon.

A definite time cannot be given for when it will be reopened.

Police are still at the scene carrying out an investigation into the crash which happened shortly after 3am. One of the lorry drivers was killed.

A police spokesman said: "There are diversions in place on to the A40 at junction six, but we are still advising drivers to avoid this route if possible as there are still severe delays."

There is currently a 10-mile tailback from junction six to junction eight.

Commuters travelling on the diverted A40 route suffered further delays when a tree branch fell across the road on the southbound carriageway, reducing the number of lanes.

This has now been dealt with, but high volumes of traffic are still on the road.
