"The Espress and Airline services are travelling via Aylesbury and the A41. We are trying to maintain a half hourly service between Oxford and London when possible.

"If passengers have to travel they should allow extra time for their journey."

Coaches from Oxford leave every 20 minutes to half-an-hour during rush hour. Services to Gatwick are hourly.

It is thought Stagecoach's London service is also affected.

Mr Ashworth said it was difficult to estimate how many coaches had been affected, but added: "It's a lot of coaches."

The collision between two lorries occurred shortly after 3am.

The driver of one of the vehicles, a man, died. Emergency services remain on the scene between junctions six and five of the southbound carriageway.

The northbound carriageway is also affected.
