Oxford saw its first snow of the winter today, but forecasters said it would not last.

Many places were expected to fall below freezing tonight as the cold snap continued.

Light snow showers fell in Oxford and other parts of the county, but it was expected to clear up during the night.

Tom Tobler, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: “It’s quite unusual to get snow at this time of year.

“There could be a small amount of snow or sleet over south-east England. A mixture of rain, sleet and a bit of snow.”

He added that the conditions were unlikely to create hazards for the transport network: “We wouldn’t expect too much to be settling on the ground. Although with it being that cold, even if it falls as rain you’re going to get ice.”

Although temperatures are not expected to stay this low for too much longer, hats, scarves and gloves will be more suitable than t-shirts and shorts for the coming weeks.

Tomorrow, northern Scotland and Northern Ireland will still be getting some showers.

Scotland especially will be very wintry but not quite as cold as today, with snow only falling on high ground.

The rest of the UK should be able to enjoy a dry day tomorrow.
