Police fined 83 cyclists who failed to have lights on their cycles during a crackdown in Oxford's city centre last night.

The £30 fines were issued in High Street between 6.30pm and 9pm.

Cyclists were issued with the penalty tickets, but were told the fine would be dropped if they showed a valid receipt for the purchase of a new set of cycle lights at their nearest police station within seven days.

The operation was run to coincide with the clocks turning back one hour at the weekend.

During a similar operation a year ago, 53 cyclists were fined.

Two other cyclists received £30 penalty tickets for jumping red lights while police were carrying out the operation.
