The trial of a man charged over the discovery of an improvised bomb at Oxford University is expected to begin today.

Mel Broughton, 47, from Semilong Road, Northampton, faces two charges of possessing or controlling explosives with intent to endanger life or damage property.

He is also charged with two counts of having an article with intent to destroy or damage property.

He was arrested in December 2007 by detectives investigating a fire at The Queen’s College sports pavilion in November 2006 and the discovery of improvised explosive devices at Templeton College in February 2007.

The trial, at Oxford Crown Court, was scheduled to start last week but was delayed by extensive legal argument.

It is expected to open this morning and is listed for two weeks.
