Charity walkers are being urged to make the most of Sunday's extra hour — when the clocks go back — to raise money for Oxford's new £109m cancer centre.

More than 240 people have signed up to take part in It's Not Just a Walk in the Park on Sunday.

The three-mile walk in the University Parks will raise funds for the new centre at the Churchill Hospital, in Headington.

Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust staff who have organised the walk are hoping people who turn up on the day will boost the numbers.

People who turn up in the morning can register between 9am and 10am for the walk, which starts at 10.30am.

Many of those taking part have personal experience of cancer.

ITV Thames Valley Tonight presenter Wesley Smith, who is starting the event, said: "I am delighted to be involved, and urge others to use that extra hour we all get that day to take part."

Mr Smith is being joined by teams from a number of Oxford companies, including Boots in Cornmarket Street, which is sponsoring the walk.

Store manager Paul Stanner said: "Knowing the incredible work the hospitals do, and the range of funding needs, we asked our colleagues which causes they would like to support.

"This was a popular choice, as many people have been touched by cancer."

Graham Brodgen, head of community fundraising for the trust, said: "Our friends at Boots really are going the extra mile — or three.

"We are very grateful to them for taking part in the walk and donating Bag for Life goody bags to all the entrants."

Entry for the walk is £7.50 for adults, while children under 16 walk for free.

Those taking part have been asked to raise at least £50 in sponsorship money.

The money raised will go towards £2m of additional funding to pay for new equipment and landscaped garden terraces.

The 217-bed purpose-built centre will replace outdated facilities and bring specialist staff together.
