A fraudster who cheated a mobile phone company out of nearly £8,000 lied about her criminal past when she became a dental nurse, a hearing was told today.

Sophie Kay, 25, was convicted in 2005 at Oxford Crown Court for being involved in a conspiracy to use to stolen credit cards to buy mobile phones, the General Dental Council (GDC) heard.

But when she qualified as a dental nurse at the Banbury Dental Surgery she lied about the conviction on her registration form with the GDC, it was claimed.

The GDC panel heard Kay admitted cheating O2 out of £7,569 in two months.

Kay started working for the Banbury Dental Surgery, in Broad Street, as a receptionist in 2004 before training as a nurse.

She told the panel she believed she did not have to declare her conviction because it was spent.

Kay, who is attending today's London hearing, admitted receiving a caution for theft and a conviction for conspiracy to cheat and defraud.

She further admitted falsely and incorrectly claiming on the registration form that she had no convictions or cautions.

But she denied intentionally misleading the GDC and acting dishonestly.

The hearing continues.
