Almost 7,000 homes in south Oxfordshire are currently without power after workmen pulled down a high-voltage electricity cable.
A spokesman for Southern Electric said no-one was hurt in the incident at a building site in the Milton area at about 10.10am, but it had affected homes and businesses in the Sutton Courtenay, Didcot and Milton areas, plus surrounding villages.
She said engineers were on scene trying to re-route the supply and hoped power would be fully restored by about 2pm.
