Staff at Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals have been given an "excellent" rating for the first time for their quality of patient care.

The Healthcare Commission runs an annual health check for hospitals and assessed the ORH's performance against key standards which were then used to calculate an overall quality rating.

The trust, which runs the John Radcliffe and Churchill hospitals in Headington, and the Horton Hospital in Banbury, was one of 100 out of 391 given an excellent rating. It employs 9,000 staff.

The commission launched the nationwide survey three years ago to judge trusts on 43 standards and 24 targets.

Nick Kerswell, a spokesman for the Healthcare Commission, said Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust, South Central Ambulance Service NHS Trust and Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Mental Health Trust all improved their ratings from fair to good, while the Nuffield Orthopaedic Trust improved from weak to fair.
