Police are currently removing hundreds of shotguns and rifles found in a house in Oxford.

Officers have closed a private road, off Headington Hill, near Oxford Brookes University, while they recover 422 shotguns and 13 rifles from the house.

Police launched the operation after revoking a man's firearms licence on Friday.

They have been searching the house for the past five days and are now in the process of seizing the weapons under a warrant executed under the Firearms Act 1968.

Police searched addresses in Iffley Road, Cowley Road, St Clement’s, Milvery Way and Old High Street, Headington, on Monday, which are also owned by the same man, but no weapons were found.

Supt Andy Murray, commander for Oxford, said: "We will continue with our investigation as to whether there has been any illegal activity, but I would like to reassure local people that there is no suggestion at this time that there is a threat to public safety."

A 63-year-old man was arrested on Monday evening for being in possession of a prohibited weapon and was yesterday on police bail pending further inquiries.
