Young patients were cheered up by six large colourful paintings on the walls of their wards.

The paintings, all depicting children's story-book scenes, were painted by George Davis, of Lancut Road, Witney, who worked in the toolroom at Smith's Industries at Witney.

They were presented to Bradwell Grove Hospital, near Burford.

Every year, all the departments at Smith's provided gifts for homes and other places, and in 1969, the toolroom selected the hospital.

Mr Davis and his colleagues visited the hospital and his suggestion for the paintings was welcomed.

Sister Angela Ellison, seen with one of the pictures, said at the time: “We did not expect anything as nice as the paintings. We are really delighted with them."
