Dozens of people gathered at an Oxford community centre for a colourful celebration of the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan — Eid-ul-Fitr.

It was the first time the Oxfordshire Bangladeshi Association had put on a community event to mark Eid, and association chairman Mohammed Mannan hailed it as a success.

He said: “This is a cultural event to celebrate multicultural diversity of the area.

“We are living in a multicultural society so I think celebrating that and getting to know each other on the same platform and sharing ideas is very important.”

People from all sectors of the community were invited to attend Sunday's celebration at the Regal Community Centre, in Cowley, which started with prayers from the Koran, followed by an address from Mr Mannan.

Among those celebrating was Suna Bibi, 35, of Titup Hall Drive.

She said: “It is a lovely celebration. It is just a gathering of everyone enjoying themselves.

“I work at East Oxford Primary School where there are all different cultures and we get to know their traditions and they get to know ours.

“The weather is beautiful and we are going to get to meet lots of new people which is really nice.”

To mark the occasion, Muslims wear their brightest, most colourful clothes and adorn themselves with sparkling jewellery.

Mrs Bibi said: “It's all about happiness, that's why we wear our nicest most colourful clothes, because it makes us feel happy.”

Salima Akhtar, 20, from Abingdon Road, said: “We get to dress up for this special occasion and cook handmade food as well. We also get new clothes and jewellery and get together with families.”
