What is thought to be the longest fair in Europe has returned to Abingdon.

The annual Michaelmas Fair was in full swing today and the fun carries on tomorrow.

Funfair rides and attractions lined Market Place, High Street and Ock Street.

Kathleen Thompson, of Geoffrey Barbour Road, brought her three-year-old son Rocky, pictured, to the fair.

She said: "I have lived in Abingdon for 10 years and have been ever since.

"The kids love it. I have had to drag my son out of there screaming as he didn't want to leave the fair. He wanted to go on all the biggest rides, which he can't."

The event was originally a hiring fair for employers and is now run by Abingdon Town Council.

Steve Rich, the council's project manager, said: "Everything went smoothly with the installation of the fair. There are lots of children enjoying themselves."

Ock Street and roads in the town centre will be closed until early Wednesday morning.

Next week, another fair comes to the town, called the Runaway Fair, which is traditionally where those unhappy in their jobs can seek other employment.
