Oxford United chairman Kelvin Thomas promised a new era of cooperation and communication at the club when he took over on Thursday and, after Saturday's win against Rushden & Diamonds, he remains true to his word.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Mr Thomas is no ordinary chairman.

Each week, during office hours, he is setting aside time in his diary to meet fans.

This afternoon, he is meeting supporters in the first such event and has promised to do so every week, as long as appointments are made in advance on a dedicated phone number.

Football clubs — at board level in particular — are often criticised for a lack of communication and openness.

And we all know that rumours thrive in an information vacuum.

No-one knows where the club is heading under Mr Thomas, but the omens so far appear good.

He is young, energetic and has a head for business.

But crucially, he hasn't forgotten that the lifeblood of the club is its army of fans at grassroots level.

Continuing a line of communication with them is key.

One thing is sure — no-one can accuse the current chairman of staying silent.
