The Moscow State Circus returns to Oxford after a seven-year break tonight with a brand new show.

The circus has set up its big top at Oxpens, to host a 35-strong cast of some of Russia's best circus performers.

The show includes the Puzanovs springboard troupe, who catapult themselves across the stage. Also featured are the Dzhusoevs, the Flying Trapeze troupe, the death-defying crossbow act of Pazpazor and award-winning clowns, Valik & Valerik.

Spokesman Paul Archer said: "Our circus combines the usual traditional elements with more unusual performances.

"There is a big springboard act and a crossbow act, which is unique, with the final arrow piercing an apple balanced on a gentleman's head. We also have the last Russian human cannonball anywhere in the world."

The circus opened today and runs until Sunday, with shows taking place tomorrow and Friday at 5pm and 7.45pm.

There are further performances on Saturday at 3pm and 7.45pm and on Sunday at 2pm and 5pm.
