Jeremy Smith certainly enlivened my breakfast toast this morning, Pity the sad sporty types (Man About Town, Oxford Mail, September 27).
As a serving teacher knocking on the door of 60 and driving a Jaguar E-Type (not bought with inherited money), I guess I tick most of his boxes.
If he were to write such a stereotyping article about certain other groups in society, he would face an avalanche of reaction. Let me cast the first stone.
The reason I drive my classic cars is because I admire their design and engineering, not to reflect "youth, vigour and sexual stamina".
One of my female colleagues of more or less the same age drives a red Mazda MX-5. Another commutes to school in the MGB he has owned for 30 years.
We just like driving properly styled and engineered cars.
Do I detect the faintest hint of jealousy in the article?
Could it be that Jeremy does not actually own the classic looking car which peeps from behind him in his picture?
So come on, Jeremy, tell us what yours is (after you've fastened your tie — no scruffs in my class, please!) — or come out for a trip in a real car!
