A man in his 80s, who called police to say he had attacked his wife, has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, police said tonight.
The man, who has not been named, called police at 10am to say he had assaulted his wife.
Police attended an address in Stratford Road in Drayton, near Banbury, and found a woman in her 70s with serious head injuries.
She was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and the man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Police said the woman's injuries were not life threatening, although she remained in hospital.
This afternoon, the man was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and was being kept in police custody.
