David Lloyd George, the Welsh wizard, introduced the old age pension 100 years ago. His eldest daughter, Olwen, would always say “Thank you, father” when she collected her pension in North Wales.
So how does the Liberal Democrats' current leader celebrate this memorable centenary?
Nick Clegg made the tragic faux pas of not knowing what today’s old age pension is worth. He thought it was about £30 a week, a third of its actual value.
To make sure that his political coffin was well and truly nailed, he also stated that he would not dream of sending his children to anything but a fee-paying school as their education was far too important to entrust to a state school!
