Osney Islanders in Oxford were treated to a feast for the eyes and mouth during their first food festival, held to highlight the benefits of local produce.

Food lovers chomped their way through an eclectic mix of fodder in East Street on Saturday, including barbecued pumpkin, home made popcorn and freshly baked cakes.

Elizabeth Newbery, of North Street, said: "It's linked with all the interest in locally produced food, tied up with the fact that many people on the island are allotment holders.

"There are no food miles where this produce has come from — it's more a case of food yards."

Fresh eggs and mushroom logs, which allow people to harvest their own mushrooms, were also on offer from Binsey farmers.

Bianca Elgar, of East Street, added: "We were really pleased with the turnout and so grateful it didn't rain."

The money raised during the day will be put towards the Osney Island newsletter and future events.
