Friends of a popular Oxford pub, almost destroyed by fire more than a year ago, celebrated in the sun today as it once again opened the doors for business. The 17th century Perch pub in Binsey was nearly devastated by flames in May 2007, when a faulty chimney flue set the thatched roof on fire.
But yesterday manager and restaurateur, Johnny Mignon, took the fine weather as a good omen and insisted 'the universe' wanted him to succeed as he welcomed back patrons in their droves. Former regular Ian Ross, from Botley, was so eager for the pub to be ready in time for Sunday that he gave up his spare time to help Mr Mignon prepare for the big day.
Also eager for the popular landlord to make the pub a success once again were close friends Miladis Diaz, originally from Mexico, and Mike Stanfield from North Oxford, regulars at The Perch for the past 12 years.
Mr Stanfield said: "We were the first through the doors as they opened, and I should imagine we will be the last to leave this evening."
Ms Diaz added: "Johnny is a great friend and the pub is the best in the area."
