Andrea Dennis, of Wallingford RC, will be in action this weekend on the Olympic course in Athens, writes Mike Rosewell.
After winning a bronze medal at the World University Championships in Belgrade a fortnight ago, Dennis and her lightweight double sculls partner Frances Fletcher from Durham, have been selected to represent Great Britain in the European Championships.
Two other Oxfordshire oarswomen, Lindsey Maguire, from Wallingford, and Kirsty Myles, from Oxford Brookes, will also be donning GB vests as members of the GB Women’s Eight.
Chris Thompson is about to undertake his third year as City of Oxford's club captain, following last week's elections.
Thompson joined the club in 1999 and, after racing at a number of levels, is now a veteran performer.
He has, in his words, “been through the mill for the club”. His leadership led to the club winning numerous trophies at all levels in the last year.
Thompson will be supported, again, by Tom Kingham as the men’s squad captain.
Kingham was in the record breaking Abingdon School first crew that achieved the 'big three' wins – the Schools Head, National Schools and Henley – in 2002.
The women’s squad captain will be Hannah Partington, a member of the club for two years who made her mark in the senior squad at this year's national championships Bill Platt and the Drohans – Suzie, Jim and Andy – will continue their sterling work with the club’s successful juniors. Tomorrow, City are staging the Isis Sculls over an 1850 metre upstream course.
With plenty of local club involvement, divisions will be held at regular intervals from 9.45am until 4pm.
