An after-school club is looking forward to laying on bigger and better holiday playschemes after receiving a £2,000 donation from Tesco. Children from the John Watson School Kids' Club in Littleworth Road, Wheatley, are celebrating after being awarded the money from the supermarket giant's community charitable trust scheme.

The money will help fund school holiday playschemes and day trips for the children — many of whom have disabilities.

Club organiser Maria Wilkinson said: "This is absolutely fantastic for us.

"Just knowing that we have the money means we can go ahead and organise trips and outings.

"It is so exciting for the children.

"It gives them the freedom to go to more places — places that parents can't necessarily take them to because of their learning disabilities or physical disability."

The club has more than 100 children on its books — the majority pupils at the special school.

All the playschemes and trips are funded by the club, which relies on charitable donations and grants to continue operating.

Kids' Club fundraiser Sallie Walker said: "The service we offer is an absolute lifeline for parents and it is only made possible by grants like this — which is why we are so grateful.

Community champion for Tesco Reba Murtaza said: "It's nice to come in, have a look around, and see the work that is being done. The club is doing a great job.

"Projects like this rely on people like us to keep funding them so that they can continue to do a great job."
