Police said this afternoon that they were continuing to question a man after a woman's body was found at a house in Banbury.

Insp Neville Clayton said the investigation was launched after a man went into Banbury police station yesterday and told staff that a woman’s body was in a house at Mold Crescent.

He said: "A murder inquiry was launched and a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

"The house where the body was found has been secured and scenes of crime officers are currently in attendance, conducting a forensic examination of the premise.

"The body has been removed from the scene and a post-mortem examination was carried out last night.

"The woman has not yet been identified and it is hoped a formal identification will take place later today.

"I would like reassure the community in this area of Banbury that a man has been arrested and at this time, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the enquiry.

"The neighbourhood policing team conducted house-to-house enquiries yesterday and will be available on the estate today to offer reassurance and deal with any concerns that residents might have.

"We have a team of detectives working to establish what happened and in order to assist with their enquiries I would appeal for information from anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area of Mold Crescent between 5pm on Monday and 11.40am on Tuesday.
