The number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Oxfordshire has leapt by almost ten per cent.

Latest figures for August, released by the Office of National Statistics, showed 4,401 people were now claiming Jobseeker's Allowance — 394 more than the previous month.

The figures provide more evidence of the impact of the ongoing economic downturn.

The statistics also show that nationally there are now 904,900 claimants, up from 860,000 the previous month.
