A father who killed his friend because he believed he was making sexual advances to his daughter was today jailed for two-and-a-half years.

James Crain, 53, was convicted of manslaughter by a jury at Oxford Crown Court after a two-week trial.

His daughter Tammey, 22, was also convicted of assisting an offender after the jury heard she had destroyed mobile phone evidence after the attack in September last year.

The court heard Crain, who had once trained as a boxer, had punched Maurice Batts on his narrowboat called Tina at Grimsbury Wharf in Banbury after hearing he had locked Tammey inside.

Mr Batts, 64, died in hospital 10 days after the attack.

Jonathan Fuller QC, defending James Crain, said: "All are agreed they had been very long-standing friends of 30-years and that really adds to the tragedy.”

Tammey Crain, also of Springfield Avenue, Banbury, was given bail and ordered to return to the court for sentencing on Friday, October 10.
