Book lovers and web surfers have finally been given a re-opening date for their local library, bringing an end to weeks of uncertainty.

Parents and children had been left scratching their heads over the continued closure of Botley Library, Oxford, which had been due to re-open on September 1 after a three-week closure for repair work.

Although the library has remained closed for the past 11 days, the Oxford Mail can reveal the library will re-open on Monday, September 22.

Oxfordshire County Council closed the facility on August 8 to stop repeated flooding of the library by fixing a one-way valve to the library toilet.

County Hall provided a mobile library in its place for a three hour period six days a week, but the timing of the closure angered local parents whose children missed out on taking part in the council's summer reading challenge during the holidays.

Meanwhile, people wanting to use its free internet connection have had to go to Oxford's Central Library.

Vicky Webb, 35, of Sweetmans Road, said: "We didn't know why it was still closed, but it has been a big loss.

"We go in there several times a week and I was planning to go in every day with my daughter Daisy now school has re-started.

The mother-of-three added: "We had been left with no idea when it was going to re-open."

Friend Karen Webb, 36, of Hazel Road, said: "No one had any idea when it was going to re-open."

The library had been forced to close for repeated episodes of flooding in the past, but it is hoped the repair work will provide a permanent solution to the problem.

County librarian Caroline Taylor said: "I would just like to say a big thank you to all our users for their patience."
