Sir — I am sure everyone around Oxfordshire affected by the floods in 2000, 2003 and 2007 feels sorry for the residents of Wales and the North East of England who have suffered from the recent severe floods and the sad loss of life, but it could so easily have been us as well. The rivers in this part of the country are full and the ground saturated and it certainly would not take much for us to flood again.

In this area the Oxford Flood Alliance, which was formed after the 2007 floods, is working hard with the Environment Agency and local councils to try to reduce flood risk.

We are pleased that some work is now being done but much more investment by central and local government is needed urgently.

We are all fully aware of how the people affected this time are feeling at the moment, we have all been there.

So instead of our politicians telling us all how sorry they are, let's hear them tell us what they are going to do about reducing flood risk in vulnerable areas of the country.
