Oxford United march on. Yet another win for Jim Smith's rejuvenated team is no surprise for those who knew that the partnership of Jim Smith and Nick Merry was certain to lead to positive results. The extent of the transformation, however, has probably exceeded even the most optimistic fans' hopes.
The crowd of over 8,000 at the latest Oxford game reminds me of the maximum crowd that could fit in at the Valley for Charlton Athletic's first game back at the new Valley after seven years playing at other teams' grounds. What an emotional day that was, about 14 years ago.
Yesterday, I was at the Valley again, part of a 26,000 crowd enjoying a Premiership match against Manchester City. Although we won 1-0, we are still bottom of the table because all three teams immediately above us also won!
Oxford are playing so well that they could be drawn against Charlton in the third round of the FA Cup, when the top teams join the competition. A win at Wycombe is what we all hope for!
