I simply must grumble about creeping Americanisms in today’s language.
In the last couple of days I’ve heard people, including presenters on the BBC, referring to ‘stores’.
These are what rational British people know as shops.
Later that day I was treated to the joys of ‘sneakers’, or trainers as they have been adequately described for a couple of generations since their invention.
This is not cool.
That’s because ‘cool’ describes something that’s slightly warmer than cold or has been in the fridge (which is short for refrigerator, not Frigidaire).
